World Party
Our friends were having a new housewarming party on this Sunday, so we were in Cranberry and by the time we got home it was late and we still had to put the kids to bed. Wifey let me go ahead without her on the premise that I would call once I got there and let her know if it was worth her coming late and dropping $25 on a ticket. I was quite sober as I arrived and found an anything but sober Hugh standing at the front of the stage while a bunch of people were seated in chairs behind him. I walk up to him and he says, motioning to the people behind him, "Everybody here are pussies!!" I knew it was going to be an interesting night. Karl Wallinger was looking a little chubby and I had already missed one of the hits, "Put the Message in the Box." I put the call in to Wifey that she might not be missing anything crazy by staying home. This was the first time I'd been in Small's when the show was over 21 so it was nice to be able to get a beer and walk up towards the front. I found a good spot to stand and by the time the band get into "When the Rainbow Comes" people had started moseying up toward the stage, giving Hugh some well needed company. The first highlight of this show was Karl getting on the keyboard as Hugh yells out "She's The One" and Karl sarcastically says "How'd you guess?" Did I forget to mention that Hugh had been stalking the band beforehand? They then followed with the great "Love Street." I'm not gonna give too much praise to this show, though. I guess I thought I'd know more songs so that's really my fault but it was average at best. Of course Hugh's opinion differs wildly on this one. Dropping $25 on a ticket doesn't help either unless you are having an insanely great time. The other highlight was the final song in the first encore, "Ship of Fools." I'm a sucker for out-loud sing-alongs and there were smiles all around as everyone joined in, "Oh, oh, oh, ohhh, … save me,….save me from tomorrow." I think the show was supposed to be over but incessant clapping brought Karl back onstage for a solo "The Ballad Of The Little Man." Hugh (he's calling this one of his top five of all time!) was ecstatic afterwards and had his usual wad of shit to get signed. I finished my beer and hoped I would make it back home in time for the season finale of Deadwood. |
