Skinks / Rahim / The Transcontinental Booze Hounds
31st Street Pub (Strip District) / The Rock Room (Polish Hill) / Bierhaus (North Side) - Pittsburgh, PA - 11.25.2006
 Starting out at local haunt, The Bierhaus, Wifey and I figured we’d have a few cheap beers checking out our friends Aaron and Billy, AKA The Transcontinental Booze Hounds, before heading over to the 31st Street Pub. Nothing’s better than that first Bierhaus draft, a large Yuengling that comes in an overly frosted 22oz mug for $2.25.
We rapped for a few minutes before the boys started up the fog machine and Pee Wee Herman intro and waltzed through a few numbers. It was obvious things weren’t going to go rowdy like they did last time we were here so after 30 minutes we drove East and I sold Wifey on a quick stop at the Rock Room to check out Life In Bed.
We caught the last three of four songs by Rahim from New York before they ended their set.
We got down to the Pub and Skinks singer Chris Cannon’s should-be wife Dana was up front at the merch table selling shit. Feeling like I needed to contribute beyond the cover we already paid, I purchased a CD and went the extra $5 for a tee-shirt that I gave Dana a hard time about because the design was, for lack of a better term, shitty. I would only later find out that she stiffed me with a medium. Touché!
We hung for a bit and, realizing it would be another 30 minutes before Skinks got on, I again somehow convinced Wifey to a return trip to the Rock Room to see some of Life In Bed’s set but as luck would have it we got there just as they were tearing down. So without even ordering a beer we scrammed and coasted back down to the Pub were Skinks were already playing.
We first caught these guys at Gooski’s a couple of months ago on a wayward stop before going to see Local Honey. We never made it to our final destination that night as Chris’s Beatlesque hooks and engaging lyrics has us wondering why we hadn’t heard about these guys until now.
The Pub was full of some of the usual suspects that include many fans and acquaintances of Chris’s previous band The Johnsons. The other two guys in the band, Wil and Blake are Pittsburgh transplants that have found a nice niche in the local scene. Having seen Skinks only twice before I was surprised to recognize as many songs as I did but that may be a testament to the quality of songs these guys have put out. The thing about Chris’ singing is that he can’t be accused of injecting it with a wide range of emotion but it’s something that grows on you and we’re enjoying that CD at home these days. There are a couple of songs here that could get play on WYEP if they gave a shit. But I’m not holding my breath.
