The Octopus Project \ Black Moth Super Rainbow \ Amoeba Knievel
06.19.2006 - The Mattress Factory - Pittsburgh, PA

I’d been seeing Tommy Amoeba at a lot of shows lately, yelling and often wearing a bright red wig. He somehow found my website and mentioned that he got his band, Amoeba Knievel back together and that they were going to be playing some shows.  Being familiar with The Octopus Project and the fact that this one was on the Northside I trekked out on a rare Monday night.

I had to bow out of a parent meeting for my kid’s preschool early but since it had devolved into a plea for finances and on-time bill payment I was ready to escape the basement cafeteria. I got to the Mattress Factory just before anyone started and ran into my brother, which was weird because I never see him out. He was waiting to check out the second band, Black Moth Super Rainbow.

It had been years since I had seen Amoeba but that all comes back to you as soon as the silliness begins. This show doubled as a birthday party for himself and Tommy came out in his Knievel jumpsuit and blasted through a short set of goofy songs enhanced by props, an onstage costume change and a Happy Birthday sing along with cake for the audience afterward. Tommy also passed out a little gift bag to everyone that contained a parachute guy and various other little plastic crap. Very cool.

After this set I headed down the street to a sweet little side street old man’s bar in the War Streets and picked up a 40 of High Life. As soon as I got back Black Moth Super Rainbow were on and the crowd had grown and were all sitting on the floor facing two of the band members who were doing the same. If I had to categorize this band I would say they are on a similar plain with Air and other rock/electronic outfits.
The main guy kinda sat in the front crossed legged and twiddling with some controls the whole time, singing occasionally. I really like these guys and hope to see them again. The female drummer was as well as the bassist were just on fire for this performance.

Afterward I walked back to the dive bar but it was closed so I headed back to the Factory and the Octopus Project just getting started. They had decorated the stage with their own props and had a projection running constantly behind them as they played. I knew they would be playing all instrumental tunes but I had no problem getting into it as their intensity rivaled any band playing to a small group of people on a Monday night. Three dudes and a girl with interesting hair, each member seemed comfortable playing each other’s instruments and they interchanged for the whole set. What blew my mind was the theremin playing by the girl. Usually people just wave their hands around, pleased to get interesting sounds out of the thing but she had a method to her madness and was pulling sounds out of it I would have never thought possible.
