Life In Bed - Transcontinental Booze Hounds

 History of the Bierhaus. Owned by Jerry, who lives a street below me and is brother to my son’s best friend’s mom and collects beer cans and memorabilia. So much, in fact, that the walls of the bar were lined with cool old cans predominantly from Western Pennsylvania but he had national stuff as well. I heard from Jerry’s sister that he was thinking of selling the place and, having always wanted a bar, daydreamed about it for a few days before realizing that days and nights spent in a one bar, and one in a somewhat depressing area at that, wouldn’t be good for my health. The last weekend Jerry is opened I take my brother-in-law from St. Louis and his cousin from Rochester down to the Bierhaus and Jerry gives us the tour upstairs where he’s made a beer museum. This knocks the socks off me and companions. Jerry thinks that the new owner will let him keep his stuff up there for the next year or so. Well, that doesn’t happen and Jerry’s girlfriend posts flyers up over the neighborhood saying that Jerry’s stuff is being held hostage. I ask sister of Jerry about it and she says Jerry’s girlfriend is crazy and that if she bought a bar she wouldn’t want to keep the previous owner’s shit behind either.
So now it’s a biker bar. Where all the cool cans used to be is now an exposed brick wall with a bunch of shitty Harley posters hanging. Not that it’s a bad place but it lost the character that made it unique.
But with a band playing and being only a few minutes from my house I’m game so I head down the hill to check this out and there’s only like five people inside the bar. I get the “large” beer and it’s a 25oz frosted mug filled with Yuengling. Not bad for $3. The Transcontinental Booze Hounds consists of two guys that not only live down the street but they were born and raised in Spring Garden. Baron Von Yozwick and Nashville Billy according to their card because there’s no way I’m remembering much conversation that took place that night. These guys were good and despite the small crowd decided to rock out anyways and played a number of covers and originals. The “Karma Police” cover definitely caught my attention. At one point the only other person in the bar really paying attention joined in on a few songs and it turns out he was some guy that did the plumbing in their house or something. I told the guys I’d take some pictures for them to add to their website but now looking over what I got I’m not sure I lived up to my end of the bargain. Sorry dudes! They invited me to hang afterwards but I rambled on the 31st Street Pub.
I got there just as Life In Bed came on and I was determined to get some good picts if nothing else. These guys always rock out and I don’t remember much other than pounding beer after cheap beer. I was impressed that the music writer for the City Paper, Aaron, was there and looking pretty trashed. He’s no poser for sure.
Anyways, with the 31st St. Bridge out of commission I had to bike back through The Strip and it took all my might to pass the new hot dog shop down there without stopping. I took some pictures off the 16th Street Bridge of everybody emptying out of the bars below and made it home in one piece.
