 I can’t say I know much about this band. I’d read some good things over the past year in the BrooklynVegan blog but that’s about it. I headed down alone to the Club Café and Cloud Cult were already onstage and on their third song or so. With only about 15 people in the audience it was a sparse crowd but they all appeared to be devoted fans. Falling on election night, I left with the Virginia and Missouri Senate race still up in the air but it was a foregone conclusion that the House was changing hands.
About 2 songs later, singer Craig Minowa, mentions that he can’t wait to get to a hotel room to watch the returns and says this is like the Super Bowl for him. He asks if anybody knows anything and I yell out “The Democrats are winning!” which seems to go over well.
Chalk this up to something you don’t usually see at shows as the band had two resident painters on stage doing their thing as the show progressed. Afterwards the painting was to be auctioned off to help pay for gas money. Considering the low attendance I figured one could probably get a deal on this but it turned out a little scary and I couldn’t see Wifey being into it very much.
As far as how the performance went, I’d probably describe this show as affecting me in the same manner that the Mountain Goats did a few months ago. Going into this without knowing a single tune was a little rough but it was impressive to watch this band that appears to be on the top of their game. Slow and melodic at times they were able to rock it out if they wanted to. Give me a few listens of their new CD and I’m sure I’ll be wishing to see these guys again in order to hear my favorites live.
I believe it was the first time this band from Minnesota has visited the Burgh but they seemed appreciative of the turnout and a few guys in the back were getting a little rowdy shouting out requests.
Afterwards I bolted quickly to Jack’s for a beer as my buddy Scott was bartending and actually gave me a free beer for once. Then, as I walked past Club Café on the way to my car, the guys in the band were standing outside and I chatted up singer Craig about the election results for a few minutes and he seemed a very nice guy. Then one of the loud guys from the back came up and says “You guys wanna hit up Jack’s, next door, for some beers?” to which Craig responded, “Um, we’ve got a 2 year-old in the van and need to start driving towards Detroit to find a room.” Talk about a buzz kill.
