 I was spreading the word that I was interested in attending this show as long as I didn’t have to pay for it. $45 for The Black Crows? What have you done for me lately? I really wanted to catch The Drive-By Truckers as I’ve become fond of their recent release A Blessing and a Curse. To the rescue come friends Moogie and Kim, who were interested in extending our two-day binge that started with Pearl Jam on Friday and included a party on Saturday. Moogie has some job that allots a $2,000 quality of life benefit that for some god forsaken reason permits the reimbursement of concert tickets. So I paid for the parking and got lucky for once.
I went into the Chevy Amphitheater on my own to catch the Truckers and was slinging my camera and a flask in my right sock. Somehow passing through security, I got a good front spot and proceeded to be underwealmed by the Truckers 40 minute performance. I don’t know if it was that I was just getting started or that the set list was somewhat lackluster but it just wasn’t happening for me. Where was “World of Hurt” guys? That’s the best song off the new one. Maybe it was the whole Sunday night thing ‘cause Patterson Hood didn’t seem totally into it either. You win some ya loose some.
I watched the beginning of Robert Randolph’s set and those guys are always on. Randolph, the steel guitar king, is incapable of putting on a bad performance. Every time I’ve seen him he seems so appreciative that people are into his music. I ended up bullshitting at the back of the venue and missing most of his set though.
By the time the Crows were up a good number of the audience were significantly partied up. It also appeared that a number of thirty something parents decided to bring their teenage boys along for this one. Well as soon as the guys got on stage I was impressed with the unusual strategy of opening with a slow rocker, in this case “Seeing Things.” Right away it was obvious singer Chris Robinson was way fucking high. He started talking about how it was a Sunday night but we should all be having a good time and “transcending into another place.” Whatever. I started to notice that his brother Rick seemed annoyed at how wasted Chris was. About halfway through the show some of the extended jamming was becoming sloppy. This guy standing next to me saw me about to fire up the one-hitter and offered to split a joint because his wife doesn’t smoke. I think I took a couple of hits and that’s all I needed. His wife ended up hitting it and he says to me, “That’s the first time in two years.” Cool.
I was surprised that I didn’t know most of the songs but then again the album I know most I bought when I was 18 years old. “Sometimes Salvation” and “Remedy” are about all I remembered knowing. Even though I had I ride I ended up eschewing the flask and buying Gatorades the rest of the night. It was a long weekend finally coming to an end.
