The Apples In Stereo
02.12.2007 / Diesel / Pittsburgh, PA

I didn’t know much about this band but since Hugh was going I figured it’d be worth it. I had caught the singer of this band, Robert Schneider, once at Club Café as a one-man opening act named Marbles and it was quite hilarious.

The Apples In Stereo’s new disk, New Magnetic Wonder has had some play recently in my house as a few of the songs are good tunes for dancin’ around the kitchen with the youngsters, particularly “Energy”.

I got down to the new Diesel, otherwise known as the old Nick’s Fat City and caught the last few songs by local up and comers Black Moth Super Rainbow. Afterwards, Hugh and I retreated to Dee’s for some cheap beers then go back to the club just as the band took the stage.

The problem with all ages shows at this place remain unchanged when the drinking is relegated to the upper floor. From upstairs the view of the stage is limited to those that can score a railing spot. Once those are gone you have to creepily hover over someone to catch a peek.

I eventually moved downstairs and the band was sounding tight. The new stage background consists of an interesting lighted façade that only enhanced the free-spirited style of The Apples. Schneider remarked on how great the sound was for the band onstage and cited how much a rarity that is these days.

Not knowing most of the songs hampered my really getting into this show but the sparse attendance and half full dance floor weren’t helping either. Chalk it up to being a weeknight I guess.
