31st
Street Pub / Pittsburgh
The
last time I saw Cleveland’s great Cowslingers was at the 31st Street
Pub with a small group of friends. Headlining bands notoriously take the
stage extremely late so we took advantage by waltzing in after 1 A.M.,
thoroughly wasted, and caught the whole set free of charge. It was one
of those nights where you just soak up the moment, being in front of true
greatness. Their singer is probably one of the most entertaining frontmen
to watch. And the guitarist was a rock lover’s gift from heaven
with amazing solos and a great guitar face to boot. What I remember most
was standing up front with a huge grin of my face and, in between drunk-guy
hi-fives, recognizing that this is what it’s all about. All the
shitty bands you see and nights that just don’t seem to work out
on a number of different levels. All that matters is the one time like
this when it all comes together.
Well, unfortunately the Cowslingers
have broke up, but they’ve been replaced by The
Whiskey Daredevils. The main difference being that the guitarist had
called it quits. So the band is attempting the Herculean task of replacing
him by adding two new guitarists to the group. So back to the Pub it was.
I didn’t leave the homestead
till about 11 and unfortunately I was by myself as some steadfast Cowslingers
fans/friends of mine baled out on me. It was a tad rainy but warm so I
donned the parka and jumped on the bike. I decided to make a detour up
Troy Hill to Hilltoppers Pub because they now have bands performing regularly
on Friday nights with no cover and cheap beer. It’s a cool little
neighborhood bar and I ran into a couple of neighbors that seemed happy
to find out that I’m a drinker. One of which is going to figure
into tomorrow night’s events. I’m not sure of the name of
the band (ed. note The Night Owls) but they were a decent rhythm and blues
type outfit. I had a few beers, bullshitted a little, and rode the brakes
down Pig
Hill and cruised across the 31st Street Bridge.
I was early for the Daredevils
so I headed over to Gene’s Last Chance for a beer or two. There
I actually found myself getting into the new Eminem CD while watching
endless replays of the Pacers fight incident in Detroit.
When it was time for the Daredevils
to take the stage I was a little disheartened to see a smallish crowd
but was determined to make the most of it. I feel that I was sufficiently
lubricated, as the Post-Gazette
preview for this show seemed to call for it. The old guitarist was
sorely missed but the two new guys held their own weight. Leftover from
The Cowslingers were the matching outfits and the singer Greg continued
to give it his all regardless of the thinning crowd as the night wore
on. Those that stayed throughout were treated to another great evening
of rock courtesy of the boys from Cleveland. It’s all kinda hazy
which means I had a good time and looking back at my picts some others
did too. I’m not sure what’s up with the guy with his shirt
off at the end but it appears he’s just enjoying the moment which
is what a night with the Whiskey Daredevils is all about.
