 About
seven months ago I was streaming this bands' new album at home and work
and pretty excited to see these guys at the 31st
Street Pub. That turned out to be a great show so I saw them a couple
of months ago at The World and all I really remember is it not being as
exciting as the first and these shitty lights the band had set up behind
them that glared in the audiences’ faces for most of the show. “Now
Here Is Nowhere” has a pretty stoner vibe so I couldn’t figure
out why anyone would think an interrogation light blinding me could in
any way contribute to my rocking out. After making my case to the sound
guy and Jon, the club owner, I just chalked it up to a rookie mistake.
I seemed to have moved past that album but thought I give it another chance
as The Secret Machines were playing The World again. Attending would be
a risky endeavor as I really wanted to see The Black Keys the following
night and back to back shows is a rarity considering the two kids and
wifey. But I did it anyway and am proud to report that it was a total
waste of time. I had a nice buzz going into this and had a seat at the
bar where those fucking lights wouldn’t be shining in my face. The
band got started with the album opener “First Wave Intact”
and got pretty intense from the get go staying close to the album version
and ending in a great wall of sound. They followed with “Nowhere
Again” and then two songs not on the album, the first of which sounded
pretty good.
Around this time the bar ran out of Iron City beer. Bars never run out
of Iron City so it must have been the new aluminum
bottles they've started using. So let’s assume this fad will
last about as long as it takes for me to say Coors Light. I was a little
annoyed by this and things just went downhill from there. The audience
was a bit on the small side and almost all male. It looked like some dudes
were trying to get into it, heads bobbing, but the damn lights probably
reminded them they had to get up for work in the morning and things pretty
much fizzled. The band apparently couldn’t have cared less and ended
this at probably a little less than the hour mark. Lights on. Queue the
background music. Time to go home.
Since I know all the songs on their album I will say they played a decent
“Road Leads Where It’s Lead” but “Pharaoh's Daughter”
was the beginning of the end for me. I’m not a big lyrics guy but
I can’t help to feel a little geeky listening to this. So I’m
over these guys and ready to transfer my affection to another group of
moody Texans, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead.
