The National
11.02.2005 / Club Cafe / Pittsburgh, PA
My
man Hugh mentioned
that if he weren’t bound to a two-show-a-month quota he would be
going to see The National. That’s where I come in and pick up the
slack. I got a copy of their newest release Alligator and after
repeated listens it grew on me. Little did I know that the melancholy
nature of that release would bear no relation to the full-on rock show
these guys are capable of.
Wifey wasn’t crazy about
me rolling at 11:30 on a Wednesday but I got down to Club Café
and was surprised at a almost-full house. Just missing my favorite “Secret
Meeting,” I was presently surprised as singer Matt Berninger was
a much more lively fellow than I had imagined. The band went through much
of Alligator and many other songs from their past couple albums.
They mentioned that they’d played Pittsburgh before but this was
the first time they weren’t the only ones in the bar.
A quick search turns up five
previous dates and it was obvious some of the folks in the audience had
attended a few of those as they continued to sing along and shout requests
throughout the hour and a half show. I know I’ve used this line
before but this was one of those shows that was so perfect it’s
hard to image I could have easily blown it off. Standouts included a jazzed
up “Looking For Astronauts” and a stadium rocking “Lit
Up.”
