was along with me on this one and we got to Garfield Artworks after 10
P.M. Manny informed us there was only about 20 minutes left so after haggling
down to $2/each we sat down in the back and proceeded to open the beers
we had brought with us. There was a small crown of about 30 people sitting
on fold-up chairs and some cool artwork on the walls in what made for
a nice urban evening in Bloomfield-Garfield.
I’m going have to pick some easier shows to review because I’d
never heard The Mendoza Line before so I’m unfamiliar with their
work. We did get to see them for about 30 minutes. The intensity picked
up noticeably as I was in the basement waiting for the girl, who I had
just barged in on, to exit the restroom. Whoops! I missed that “Knock
Loudly” sign. Their last two songs rocked. Good enough that we bought
a cd. It also turns out Charlie Bissell was playing with them and although
we missed his set I did get a picture of him with Wifey and we paid him
$8 for a burned CDR of Secaucus by The Wrens.
So it was off to Dell’s in Bloomfield where we had a beer and met
up with Bob who was just getting off his shift. He wanted to check out
“Theater Titanic”
which was part of a “Festival of Firsts” happening in Pittsburgh
this weekend. I only had two beers left so we consolidated cars in Polish
Hill and Bob brought along his two Buds and we were off to the north shore
of the Allegheny River.
With this going off at midnight I had no idea what to expect as we headed
down to the parking area between PNC Park and Heinz Field. Turns out there
were close to five thousand people there so the fold up chairs we lugged
from our car were of no use. They had set up a barge along the river and
we were a few hundred feet up the grassy lawn so we didn’t have
the best view either.
I won’t say this show was a waste because it was really a nice change
of pace to be along the river at midnight with a few thousand other people
watching a bunch of Germans run around on a barge with fire and water
all over the place and a gorgeous city view in the background. But the
first half of this little over an hour show was a tad slow. It wasn’t
until the Titanic started sinking (symbolically, of course) that it got
interesting visually. A band played on the barge while actors were playing
the parts of ship captain, owner, chef, rich lady, etc. Again, it involved
lots of water being sprayed all over the place and at one point, pork
bones being thrown into the crowd. The audience was well behaved if you
consider that there were a good number of drunks in attendance. My earlier
call that four beers between Bob and I was sadly mistaken so this may
have factored into the displeasure.
As soon as this was over people bolted to their cars and we made last
call at Gooski’s where we caught the final song by Silver Tongued
Devil.
