 Let
me start off by saying that this band was awesome. Not having heard of
them before I armed myself for this show by listening to a couple of downloaded
songs and read various internet articles. It sounded like it was worth
a shot.
If you’re reading this wifey let me reiterate that the day late
dinner and decent bottle of wine that I provided was truly a belated Valentine
present and not my latest ploy to get out of the house on a Tuesday night.
That said, I headed out on the bike in unseasonably warm weather for mid
February. We haven’t had a terrible winter so far but the combination
of cold and wet has kept my commute to work limited to my car. So the
ride up Penn Avenue to Garfield Artworks was a bit exhausting and the
six-pack of Iron was weighin’ me down.
It’s really impossible
to figure out what time any band is going to be on as I was early again
so I headed over to Bloomfield. I guess I could have stayed and watched
one of the opening bands but I’d rather sit at a bar and nurse a
beer while I stare at the tube or wall o’liquor than sit by myself
and listen to someone that may suck. I settled on the Coyote Café
hoping to catch one of their jazz jam sessions but it turns out that they
were having a jam or band every night this week but this one. So two beers
later it was back to Penn Ave. to see The Comas.
There were about 25 or so in
attendance tonight and I initially took up a seat along the wall. But
after the third song or so it was obvious these guys were doing something
special as a wall of sound was filling out the narrow long room that is
Garfield Artworks. So I got up and joined the rest of the head-bobbers.
The female guitarist really helped fill out this band with her emotive
lead and backing vocals and I couldn’t get over the fact that the
singer looked exactly like my younger brother. Fan interaction was kept
to a minimum as The Comas churned out one song after another from the
wonderful release Conductor.
Reviewing these shows in which
I have no knowledge of the band isn’t easy. I mean, gimme a Wilco
or Trail of Dead or even Bright Eyes (I’m trying to keep it hip
here) and I may be able to comment on every nuance of their performance.
But for something like this I can only say it was much better than most
with some great engrossing rocking-out moments. They did throw in a cover
of Ween's hypnotic "It's Gonna Be (Alright)." The icing on the
cake here was picking up the Conductor cd for $10 and finding
out it included a dvd that is like a long form video for the album. That’s
just fucking cool. And it wasn’t shitty as I expected but very professional
with layers of effects and animation that makes you wonder how this little
band playing to 25 people can get this out. It turns out there probably
was some label money behind this and expectations weren’t matched
as it got dropped to a lesser label for release but still, who else is
doing this? Some of the songs are already stuck in my head and it just
makes you realize what you can be missing by staying at home on a Tuesday
night and playing it safe.
