The Breakup Society,
Whiskey Daredevils
03.25.2005 / 31st Street Pub / Pittsburgh, PA
I’m
just gonna make a few observations about this show. Firstly, though it’s
doubtless that The Whiskey Daredevils will ever be able to draw a huge
crowd it’s still a sad spectacle to see only a handful of people
turning out for these guys. Not that that will deter singer Greg Miller
and his cohorts from going all out but their performance really deserves
a bigger audience. Blame it on the limitations of the rockabilly genre
or maybe it’s just that Pittsburghers aren’t interested in
seeing a balls-to-the-wall rock and roll show (where are you Cowslingers
fans?).
Drunkenness and time
have fogged the memory but the Daredevils didn’t disappoint for
a perfect hour set. Donning his cap for “Ironic Trucker Hat”
and mentioning how, to his surprise, he recently found himself reading
accolades of his buddy Ed’s CD in Spin Magazine of all places, Greg
and the band were in good spirits. What followed was nothing short of
a great set of country-tinged rock. I’ll keep showing up. What’s
your excuse?
Second observation. The longer
you stick around, and the better your skills as a songwriter and performer
become, the greater the chance that your own hometown couldn’t give
a fuck about your band. How else to explain the collective yawn given
Ed Masley and his band The Breakup Society’s release James At
35, out almost a year now. Given an initial great review over at
Popmatters.com
and some recent praise at Spin Magazine, James at 35 got a few
mentions at home but quickly dropped off the radar.
You haven’t lived in
Pittsburgh if you don’t know someone that once played in The Frampton
Brothers with Ed. With The Breakup Society things haven’t changed
much other than the name. Gone is guitar wizard Sean Lally but his replacement
was more than up to the job.
Following the Whiskey Daredevils,
Ed and his band took the stage as the audience size increased a bit and
the guys from Comrad and Black Tie Revue came to either rock out or to
kiss a little leading-newspaper
ass. Regardless, everyone was having fun and the songs from the new album
were played with loving precision. Ed was in full rock star mode and his
enthusiasm spilled over into the audience. Closing out The Pub at close
to 2 it was a hairy bike ride home but well worth it.
Note: I began the night at
Hilltoppers Pub. After riding the whole way up the hill I realized I forgot
my wallet and had to ride down Troy Hill, up Spring Hill to get some cash
and back down again, then back up Troy Hill. Yea, it was a bitch but I
wasn't getting by that night on my looks. Anyways, I caught some local
dudes Open Wide playing there and they were decent and the crowd was very
festive and drunk. They kick out the jams here every Friday night.
