 I’m
31 so I’ll admit to relying on Pitchfork
to try to keep up with the youth of today. So anytime those self-absorbed
snots give an album a 9 outta 10 I figure there must be some redeeming
value to it. That’s how I came to find out about The Arcade Fire.
I picked up their album “Funeral” and you know what it is
great. I’d hate to use clichés like urgency, driving beats
and intensity, but they’re all in the album. Which would also translate
well to a live show.
Reports of the huge anticipation, big crowds, and a great show in their
recent appearance at the CMJ music festival in New York made this a must
see, almost too good to be true. Alas it was. Could somebody please give
Manny Theiner a fucking website! I’m getting ahead of myself.
Being a Monday night, wifey wasn’t really too interested in this
so I headed out alone on the bike in the cool November night. It became
apparent that the six cans of Strohs were seriously weighing me down on
my ascent up Penn Ave. but I figured the payoff would be worth it. I’d
listened to “Funeral” numerous times and was familiar with
all the songs, which always makes for a better experience. As I neared
Garfield Artworks I heard some god-awful sound emanating from inside and
some folks milling around outside. Rather then head to the bar and return
later after the opening band I thought I’d check out the crowd.
Problem was that there wasn’t a crowd. Manny comes up to the table
and says this one is free tonight. Oh? Cool! Wait a second. “When
is The Arcade Fire playing?” Manny, shouting over the noise, says,
“Ya, they’d canceled about a week ago!”
I was pretty bummed but then I’d remembered that The
Cynics were playing a rare Monday night show over at Gooski’s.
So I headed to Del’s and caught Bob just getting off his shift.
We put a couple down and then reconvened at his Brereton Street digs for
a little more pre-show activities. In retrospect this sequence of events
was a mistake because by the time we walked up the street to the bar the
band had only a couple of songs left.
I hadn’t seen these guys in a while and they
have a pretty good garage band reputation. While they are apparently still
fairly big in Europe, the singer lives right up the street from Gooski's,
next to our kids’ baby-sitter. So that’s cool. He’s
a very charismatic performer and was all over the place tonight, on stage
and off. The guitarist, who is think is the meat to these potatoes, is
stellar in his own right. They cranked out a couple of spirited numbers
and called it a night as Michael, the singer, said they’d be partying
the night away at his house and all were welcome. Seeing how it was only
11:30 and everyone remained at the bar afterwards I doubt that happened.
But what do I know? I’m not a rock star. The night did help reaffirm
that Pittsburgh isn’t a total cultural wasteland as a fairly decent
number of hip bar-goers remained and partied late into Tuesday morning.
Who says you gotta wait till the weekend.
