From The Jayhawks:
Gary Louris and Mark Olson Horses and Blow Don’t Mix
I had been reading the fansite reviews for some previous shows and wasn’t sure what to expect. Is Mark a little wacky? Was Gary going to get pissy if things weren’t sounding 100 percent? I’d never seen these two together but had seen numerous Jayhawks shows and each was wonderful so I had no reason to think this would be otherwise. They took the stage and opened with “Pray For Me” followed by my favorite “I’d Run Away.” They sounded great and Wifey and I were pinching ourselves that we were finally seeing those two voices together. The crowd was pretty vocal and Mark mentioned that the folks in Kentucky were a better audience than those in Tennessee. This just got everybody more worked up and the response was kept at this level all night. It was amazing and Mark was eating it up. Recalling earlier tours at Lexington, Mark wondered if the two girls that took the band out on horses while they were doing blow were still around. No takers but it got a good laugh. The hits kept coming, “Waiting For The Sun,” “Sister Cry,” all sounded wonderful. The whole show became a big sing along really. Gary was kinda quiet, singing with his eyes closed, and first spoke up during one of Mark’s songs (I think), “I guess we’re rewriting this song as we play it. I’m supposed to have a solo here.” No big deal as they adjusted and Mark laughed it off. Actually, it was hard to keep your eyes off of Mark as he seemed to be having so much fun and was making all these goofy faces. His bass playing was quite good and I felt guilty for ignoring everything he’s done since he left the band. I had no problem getting into his songs and they fit nicely within the set. He seemed like a really fun guy and you wanted to just give him a big hug after the whole thing. When they got to “Blue” everyone was singing at the top of their lungs and I can’t say enough about this crowd at Lexington. They really made it a great experience. The band came out for an encore and as soon as it was over we walked out and around the corner for a beer somewhere else. After that we were on the prowl and, walking back in front of The Dame, we saw a guy standing outside and I was telling Wifey, “that guy’s in the movies or something” and yelled “Hey Steve! Let me get a picture of you with my wife.” He obliged and then crossed the street and got in a car. Weird! There were people milling about inside The Dame so we went back in and got pictures with Gary and Mark. Gary was very cool and put up with my drunken rambling. We were so excited and were still on cloud nine. We met a few people but they were going home so we headed out on our own and found this neat little joint around the block with a cool funk band playing out of the front corner of the bar. The drunkenness escalated and we went over the The Cheapside and paid $10 cover to check another band out. I don’t remember much from this point, as we probably should have just called it a night but I got some pictures of these guys too. Walking back to the car we realized that we left a credit card at one of the bars and I locked myself out of the motel in the cold and in my underwear so it was an epic night. Hopefully I’ll be able to post a whole setlist later as I saw some folks writing down song names. |
