The Black Keys/ 10.07.2004
The
World / Pittsburgh
Jesus,
these guys rock. To get a sound like this out of two people is inspiring.
My kid is currently taking guitar lessons and if he wasn’t so busy
listening to Toby Keith I would like to have brought him to this and said,
“Look, you don’t need a whole band. Just someone else to play
drums.”
I’m only a ten minute bike ride down a massive hill to get to The
World and after a couple of beers and a puff or two I was barreling down
towards the city on a clear, crisp early fall night. The crowd at The
World was a decent size and right off the bat I could tell there was a
great deal of anticipation waiting for The Black Keys. The last time these
guys played Pittsburgh was at the 31st Pub. By the time I got to that
show it was sold out and so packed I wouldn’t have wanted to even
been in there.
They started off with a few
songs off their new CD Rubber Factory and then continued with “Hard
Now” off of thickfreakness. That really got the crowd going and
throughout the show the band kept up the intensity. Drummer, Pat, worked
especially hard throughout the show and just watching him labor over that
drum set makes me tired. The guys mentioned they had one more show to
do before they returned home to Akron. You can’t blame everybody
for living in Ohio but it’s cool to know that there’s still
a little inspiration left to squeeze out of the Rust Belt.
