 Increasingly,
I’ve noticed that as tours are announced on Pitchfork or elsewhere
most are leaving Pittsburgh out of the itinerary. So I’ll try to
make sure this is the last time I bitch about that and just note that
I’m going to have to be creative about stuff to see if I want to
keep this site going. But as spring rolls around it’s gonna be tough
to ignore what we’ll be missing. Oh wait! Green Day is coming. Yea.
Wifey and I made a trip over
to the South Side that included a stop in Barry’s Pub (Duquesne
U. hangout) and then Jack’s to talk to my buddy and Time
Magazine contributor Scott McGrath. We then headed over to Club
Café and were lucky enough to grab two seats at the bar. I’ve
heard that recent shows here have been a little overcrowded but this one
turned out to seat just about everyone. In fact, I was a bit surprised
that there was such a decent crowd because I had never heard of the Tarbox
Ramblers until this show.
Taking the stage were three white
guys from Boston, two middle age and balding and a younger guy playing drums.
Michael Tarbox, the lead singer seemed a little cranky as he took the stage
but as he started to sing I was impressed with his growling voice and slide-guitar
prowess. I guess I would describe their music as country foot stompin’
blues. After the first song, “Third Jinx Blues” a mid-tempo romp,
some guy yelled, “Play more of that!” which seemed about right to
me. But this same guy would be yelling for Dylan songs all night until someone
told him to shut up.
What was great about these
guys is that they were able to create their own atmosphere around them
and you just kind of got sucked into it. My after-three-songs-smoke-break
(Wifey was driving) may have helped, but each song layered nicely onto
the other and if they were playing in a more rowdy place I’m sure
most people would have got up off their keister for most of the show.
Looking back over the songs off their recent album I’d say standouts
were “Country Blues,” “Last Month of The Year”
and an old SS. Simon & Jude men’s choir standard “Were
You There?” Another highlight would be the fact that I got drunk
in the presence of an out of work Penguins announcer for the second time
in recent months: my third favorite Steigy brother, Paul.
