Solomon Burke / 08.14.2005
Hartwood Acres / Pittsburgh, PA

Like clockwork, the threat of rain materialized just after 7:00 for what has become a recurring theme at this year’s Sunday night Hartwood Acres concerts. Whether it was the rain or unfamiliarity with Solomon Burke that kept the crowds away, those who did attend were in for a treat as a small drizzle settled in and the curtain covering the Hartwood stage dropped to reveal King Solomon and his crew of 10 musicians and backup singers. Burke dropped his red cape to reveal a bright blue sequined suit and sat on his golden throne to begin a near two hour romp that would take listeners through the Soul music of the past up to his more recent and acclaimed releases of the last few years.

Doing his best Regan impression (Mr. County policeman, tear down these gates) Burke implored the crowd to get closer to the stage and start dancing, which they did.

I’ll leave the song details to Ed’s review, as I’m not too familiar with his song names. He did at one point cover some of Soul’s greatest, including Ray Charles and Otis Redding.

Two things that surprised me were one, how smooth his voice still is and how he’s able to hold some of his strongest notes, and two, the general congeniality that this man exhibited. He just seemed like the happiest guy in the world and near the end of the show, when he allowed some of the audience up on stage, he held court from his throne with the patience that only a man with 21 kids and god knows how many grandkids could.

What began as a sing along to “Proud Mary” had turned into a showcase for those looking for a little time in the spotlight. And to our surprise none other than Bob Smith, friend of bensreviews, found his way on stage as he showed the little ones how to get down.

Luckily the rain lasted only 20 minutes as the show initially looked like it was going to have an early end.

So this makes two weekends of back-to-back blowouts at Hartwood, ending this coming Sunday with Los Lobos, sure to be a lively crowd.
