 I
was really looking forward to this as I had to leave early at the last
Auto Club show and for some reason it wasn't living up to expectations.
I think Slim mentioned he wasn't feeling well and I noticed that some
intensity was missing.
As I got out of my car I realized
I forget my damn wallet. All I really needed was the $6 cover since I
had a cooler full of beers to bring into this coffee house. I didnt feel
like going home so I stopped into Del's looking for Bob Smith but no go.
I headed back to the Quiet Storm hoping I saw someone I knew and as I
was explaining myself to the doorman I saw a guy Dave who I run into every
now and then. He graciously spotted me and it turns out we were dueling
cameras for most of the night.
While lubricating, I was chatting
up Becky from opening band Local Honey and her boyfriend. It turns out
the three of us were the only ones interested in really partying this
Sunday night as they had a bottle of something that was well on its way
to being kicked. After a few minutes of discussing the joys of Slovak
heritage Slim Cessna's Auto Club took the stage.
Tonight's show was definitely
my favorite of the three I'd seen. The crowd was into it and everybody
was having fun and, considering the song subjects: pine boxes, Satan,
Jesus Christ, etc.., it takes a special group to pull that off.
Part of the attraction of this
band is that in addition to the top notch musicianship there is an interesting
interplay between the two singers Slim and Munly. When they aren't singing
at the hip they are down in the audience rolling on the floor and saving
each other.
They played some favorites
here, one being "This Is How We Do Things in the Country." "Goddamn
Blue Yodel #7" was another great number with Slim showing off his
vocal chops. Slim made brief mention of his current Pittsburgh residency
but didn't talk too much about it. Doesn't he know we Pittsburghers like
to hear how much everybody loves it here?
I think they closed with "Hold
My Head" which is a perfect example of how the Auto Club can work
a song from humble beginnings into a crescendo of voice and sound in which
you just want to sing along at the top of your lungs and don't want it
to stop. A great tune. Probably one of my favorite shows of the year so
far.
