7.28.2006 - Blueberry Hill - St. Louis, MO
 It seems like every time we go to St. Louis to visit the in-laws we always miss by a week or so some show that would never stop in Pittsburgh. This time I finally catch a break and see the Silver Jews are playing on Friday night. Problem is I’m not familiar with any of their work so I order their two recent disks and quickly fall in love with them. The only way I got “Sometimes a Pony” out of my head was when I finally discovered “Friday Night Fever” which I described to Wifey as my new theme song and I think was originally done by George Straight.
So Friday rolls around and Wifey decides that she’d rather go drinking with her friend so husband of said friend agrees to tag along and I try not to get his expectations too high. I mean, I’d recommend a band like Marah to anyone because once they start rocking you’d have to be a stick in the mud to not have a good time. But I figure the Jews are going to be more challenging to get into especially if it’s your first introduction to the band and considering their limited touring history and noted frailties of founder David Berman.
We get to the Duck Room of Blueberry Hill, which is a basement room and it’s pretty full but not sold out. Ten minutes later the Silver Jews take the stage and the husband, Scott, instantly remarks about the lovely bassist, and believe me, with over 80% guys in attendance he wasn’t the only one. Some guy in front of us hears our conversation and he look back and gives us an agreeable nod. Turns out the bassist, Cassie, is Berman’s wife.
They lead off with “Dallas” and the crowd was somewhat subdued but the second song “Animal Shapes” lives them up a bit. Berman went into some soliloquy about never having played St. Louis and how he was imagining what people were thinking about when they were driving to the show. Or something like that.
Things slowed down during “Time Will Break the World” but the lively “I’m Getting Back into You” cheered things up again. By the time they got to “Sometimes a Pony” some of the audience that was waiting for their moment to rock out finally found it. “Punks in the Beerlight” was another one that livened things up a little.
Berman seemed wary of doing an encore but they went offstage and only he came back on and started a song I figured he would be doing solo until he wondered aloud where the rest of the band was. With everyone back they launched into “New Orleans.” I couldn’t have asked for a better closer with “There is a Place” and its wonderful pounding beat as most sang along to the lyrics “I saw God’s shadow on the world.”
I missed a few songs not on the setlist, “Tennessee” for example, but all in all it was a good show. Scott, totally unfamiliar with anything about this band, really enjoyed it and I’m guessing it took more than Cassie’s miniskirt for him to say that.
