Robert Randolph
& the Family Band / 08.07.2005
Hartwood
Acres / Pittsburgh, PA
On
a lovely Sunday evening we loaded up the beer and the kids in the wagon
and headed out to Hartwood Acres for the Robert Randolph & the Family
Band show. We were running a little late but so was the band and thanks
to a last minute back road shortcut we arrived with time to spare and
were able to find our friends from Blairsville. Walking across the lawn
the 13-year-old was surprised by the large hippie contingent. For some
reason, songs that go over five minutes attract a certain kind of audience,
son.
Sitting in front of us were
Jerry and Dave, each owners of their own record and CD stores, respectively.
Dave seemed a bit tipsy and said they had arrived at about 4:00, so considering
the show was about to begin at 8:00 I’d say that’s a pretty
good head start. It was also Jerry’s birthday and being a semi-celebrity,
especially amongst music lovers, he constantly held court to numerous
friends coming up to say hi.
As the band took the stage
the crowd rose to their feet and Robert sat down to his pedal steel guitar.
Opening with “Run For Your Life” the band seemed in good spirits
and they followed with a cover of “Jesus is Just Alright”
which really got people dancing.
An upbeat “The March”
kept things grooving as the sun began to set, placing a warm pink glow
upon everyone. Even the 2 year old was dancing and having a good time.
On “Shake Your Hips”
about 40 girls were allowed upon the massive stage as they twirled and
danced while Robert was all smiles. I’m not sure if this is a usual
thing but crowd seemed to dig it and it really upped the audience participation,
as we were all part of the family tonight.
“Billie Jean” brought
some dude up on the stage to sing one verse and he was horrible. Way off
key. So I’m guessing that wasn’t planned. But as Robert moved
between his guitar and pedal steel it seemed to be an anything goes type
of night.
They were still playing at
9:45 when we had to bail to get the kid in bed. Of all the shows I’ve
seen at Hartwood this was definitely the liveliest crowd and, being a
Sunday, this was also my church for the week so I killed two birds with
one stone.
