 Remember
that bar in the movie "Roadhouse" where all the bartenders were
hot, patrons drank copious amounts of booze, and when people weren’t
breaking pool sticks over each other they were fucking on car hoods out
in the parking lot? Well it took a little road trip but that place is
The Silo and it’s located in Reading, PA. Do not pass go do not
collect $200.
Wifey and I were headed to
a wedding in New Hope (home of Ween) and were looking for something to
do on the way. I dig the one Railroad Earth CD borrowed from a friend
but can’t say I’m a huge fan or anything. It turns out this
was one of those shows that benefitted from low expectations as we had
a rollicking good time and a new appreciation of Reading to boot.
For one: we were amazed at
the huge Hispanic population in Reading. In Pittsburgh you are more likely
to find a Roethlisburger
or pierogies
on a menu than a decent plate of huevos rancheros or migas.We drove up
the mountain to the Pagoda then
headed back down for some eats and then it was over to the Quality Inn.
I had time for one beer in the lounge where some jazz band was jamming
to “Tighten It Up.”
The
Silo is an odd bird. A dance club up above, down below it is a cavernous
joint full of character. Sporting a huge oval center bar flanked by two
additional bars along the walls, it also has an open pit dance area and
even balconies surrounding the whole place. We were impressed and while
waiting for the band to start, wondered why we can’t have a place
like this in Shitsburgh.
Consisting of six members and
playing a mix of traditional and contemporary bluegrass, Railroad Earth
took the stage and the dancers took to the pit. These guys are touring
whores and although it was their first time in Reading it wouldn’t
have taken much for folks out here to have seen these guys before considering
they have played in PA forty-one times in the last three years.
I found the first set a bit
subdued but quite enjoyable. They played “Mighty River” which
was in rotation on WYEP. I wondered why the dudes in the back were bothering
to tape this because I was imagining that all of their shows must sound
similar. But the partying escalated and when the band took a set break
I headed across the parking lot to our room to toke up.
Now, wifey swears that the
second set was no different than the first and that I’m basing my
assertion on chemical enhancements but I disagree. Sure that helped, but
these guys came out smokin’ and everybody knew it. The crowd was
whipped into a dancing frenzy and kept that way through two encores. “Colorado”
was a highlight and the absence of “Give That Boy A Hand”
was a minor disappointment but what a wonderful time. Some of the wild
abandonment of the evening may be due to the convenience of a 30 second
walk to the Quality Inn. It’s amazing what can happen when you take
the drive out of the drunk.
