 Phil posted this show on the Roboto board mentioning that he’ll be playing just about every song he knows to fill two hours. Weird Paul chimed in that he should play at the Grill ‘cause he’s got plenty of songs to while the time away. I posted, in jest, that they should play together. Somehow Manny got involved and now you’ve got a show with Phil and Manny and Paul who weren’t scheduled to play but were there because, as Phil so nicely put it, “The internet booked them.”
The Walnut Grill is a cozy upstairs bar in Shadyside and a perfect venue for a chilled out Monday night of singer/songwriter fare. Shortly after I arrived Phil took the stage along with another guitar player and played through a number of his songs and covers. It was a fine understated effort. I should have picked up a CD. He then asks Manny and Paul onstage and they played together for a couple of songs before Phil left the stage to Weird Paul and Manny as they pounded out a couple of hits including “I Got Drunk at Chuck E. Cheese.”
I took off at the set break and headed down to the Thunderbird in Larryville to see The Codetalkers feat. Col. Bruce Hampton. I’d seen Col. Bruce back in the H.O.R.D.E. days with Aquarium Rescue unit and have a Fiji Mariners disk from years back that I always liked. Well, the Bird was packed complete with your hippies and tapers. After one song they took a break and, pissed at my timing, I took a walk down Butler and got back just in time to grab a front spot as they started up again. This is when I noticed that the Col. was missing. I asked the guy next to me and he mentioned something about him being sick. I was a little bummed but the band was pretty good. I’m not much of a jam band guy anymore but I made the best of it. I gave them about 40 minutes of my time then called it a night.
