On Star Hotel / 12.10.2004
The Quiet Storm / Pittsburgh, PA

Never heard of these guys until I started browsing Hugh’s website. Their three songs online sounded pretty good so Wifey and I met up with country mice, Patrick and Molly, to show them a night on the town. The denigration of the Pittsburgh music scene pretty much has relegated most live music options to smaller venues. I’m a little old to be making road trips to Cleveland to see the bigger bands so these smaller shows will have to do. Besides, a lot of this shit lately has been b.y.o.b., so no complaints here.

We got to The Quiet Storm around 10 just as the band was getting set up. Sitting right up front in a big comfy chair was the man himself, Hugh, with a beer in one hand and his Sony camera in the other. He’s more animated than I had imagined from seeing the pictures of himself with various band members on his site. We talked a bit and shared some beers and all in all he’s a very cool dude. Plus, you would think he’s financing his kids’ college on the success of this band, seeing all the shit he had them sign. So buy an album, please!

One Star Hotel is a young band from Philly that just released their second album, which coincidentally, had just secured a decent review that very day on popmatters.com. They played about a 10-song set with about half the songs culled from their new release, Good Morning, West Gordon. These guys put on a nice, enthuastic show and if they can tighten it up a bit maybe Hugh won’t need to send his kids to community college. Standouts included “Can’t Be Trusted,” “Two And Four,” and my favorite “Frustrated And Free” which has a great multi-instrument jam towards the end. They concluded their set by saying “See you in the Super Bowl.” Nice. Let’s keep it in PA this year.

We kinda rushed out of there and headed over to the BBT to catch some local musicians playing the whole Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas thing. I barely remember this from when we used to steal HBO when I was a kid but I think my whole family was obsessed with it. Unfortunately, we arrived just as they were sloppily playing the last song. The band continued to play some covers as we had a beer then headed up to Pollacks as the city mice tried to show off all the cool East End dives. Yet upon entry, the musty and cigarette-stained air of Pollacks had been transformed into a DJ plagued-overlit-hip-hop scene. Jesus. Is nothing sacred!

So we went to the next best thing, Sufak's Round Corner down in Larryville. It’s just a matter of time before the artsy fartsy types buying up all the brick homes here figure this place out so enjoy it while you can. Oh, and they also have some Seger in the jukebox too. A beer or two here and it was back over to the North Side and Park House. There we gouged on peanuts and closed out the bar with our drinking buddy (except he doesn’t know it yet) Mike Lang. Would somebody please get this guy a hockey season already?
