NYC Road Trip / 07.07.05 - 07.11.05

I’m just gonna make this a general post as Wifey and I were playacting childless parents in Manhattan and we got to do several things of interest musically. First of all let me give a shout-out to Aunt Mary and her contracting job with Madison Square Garden for providing a $2700 a month apartment on W. 34th and 10th for the extended weekend.

This made the $5 Yuengling drafts less painful.

On Thursday we headed over to Greenwich Village to see Dash Rip Rock at Lion’s Den. There was a time when this band we leading stars of the burgeoning alt. country movement. I’ve seen them play to big crowds at SXSW and they played a memorable drunken night of debauchery at The Decade in Pittsburgh years back. Still let by wild man Bill Davis, the ever-changing trio has been off the radar in recent years.

A fairly decent crowd was there as we arrived and sat through a couple of songs from some Phish wanna-be kids playing boring instrumentals. So we bailed and hit up a couple of different bars within a short walk in the Village. Upon our return Dash was already on but the crowd had dwindled to only 10 or so people. The band was unfazed though and tore through their catalog of clever country rock songs.

Wifey and I became annoyed by some chick who, standing right in front of the band, kept holding up her cell phone camera in the guys’ faces. I’d like to think that when I’m taking pictures I’m not being annoying but there is something about the way people hold of those damn phones, arm completely outstretched, when taking a photo that seems intrusive.

Wifey was indulging my drunkenness this night but being with child and sober she was getting tired so I decided to yell out my request, “If I Hide,” before we left. Well something got lost in the space between myself and the band as they acknowledged me and began playing their one-hit-wonder “(Let’s Go) Smoke Pot,” a parody of the Fifties dance hit “At the Hop.” Good enough for me as we called it a night.

Checked out some dinosaur bones and caught the revival of Glengarry Glen Ross. Liev Schreiber fucking rules in this play.

Afterward, we headed over to the Lower East Side to try to catch The Constatines at the Mercury Lounge but it was sold out. So we just walked around and hit a few bars. One note: on seeing what may be one of the shittiest bars I’ve ever come across we of course dropped in and enjoyed drinking with the crazies for one cheap beer.

7/9/05
A marathon day walking around Little Italy and Chinatown, taking a boat ride around Manhattan and then what was probably an ill advised (by myself) train ride over to Coney Island. They’ve still got some fixin’ up to do but it was cool and I got my Nathan’s Famous.

We then headed over to hipster Williamsburg. I had to laugh as the retro sneakers began appearing just a few stops before we got there. We met up with former Pittsburgher and singer-songwriter powerhouse Chance Wayne who actually lives blocks away in Greenpoint.

He gave us a quick tour of the neighborhood and we walked through a crowded church fair that was off the beaten path.

Later, and sitting at a bar, we were talking to a cool bartender originally from Johnstown that was making us feel at home and he hooked Chance and I up with a Flaming Lamborghini, a truly spectacular drink that creates a trail of fire in it’s wake.

We noticed a group of people heading through the door and looking closer, I realized the members of the most rocking live band in the world, Marah, had just walked in. Wow! I was fucking ectatic. I went over and began talking to Serg explaining how I had seen the band in the Burgh’ four times in the last year and mentioned my pictures and he said he had read my review from my posting on their message board. Cool. Kirk came up and said hi and later we sat outside and talked with Serg and Dave for about 20 minutes about various shit and were making fun of Kirk’s running habit. Serg is definitely the nicest guy and I gotta say this just made my fucking trip. Turns out they lived really close by. Side note: Dave, was quite impressed that Chance was in the Williamsburg Saturday softball league. I guess this is what people with no jobs spend their time doing as Chance is also in the Sunday and Wednesday leagues. He got his web address to the guys so maybe this is his chance, sorry, to get noticed.

7/10/05
A mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and then we headed over to Central Park to catch the Blind Boys of Alabama in the sweltering heat of SummerStage. We managed to position ourselves under a small bit of shade and were entertained for over an hour and a half as the Blind Boys staged their own Sunday revival for the liberal sinners of New York. The sound was good and, although scripted, the Boys kept the crowd engaged with their stage antics. I was able to get a couple of good photos as the singer made his was through the crowd on what became a 20 minute extended song that felt like it would never end.

The sheer number of people in the park was impressive and we spent a good part of the afternoon just sitting and people watching.

The next day it was back to the small pond but we were exhausted and though dreams of what might have been danced in our heads getting back to $1.75 drafts wouldn’t be so bad either.
