Modey Lemon
10.07.2005 / Mr. Small's Theatre / Pittsburgh, PA
I
put off writing this one way too long so I’ll keep it short.
Rolled outta the house at 11:30 as Wifey was falling asleep. A release
for Modey Lemon’s The Curious City, this show was well
attended but there was a slight lack of crowd energy except towards the
front. Let’s call this The Mr. Small’s curse. Modey Lemon
rocked and put on a fine show, accentuated by lively light and projection
work. Having seen this band a number of times over the years, they never
fail to disappoint. The serious fans up front were having the time of
their lives singing along and carrying on. My only regret was that by
walking in without paying I was missing the requisite wristband for the
bar area.
Heading towards home, I stopped at Hilltoppers. Usually
I run into a few neighbors but there were only a few folks and the band,
.45 Caliber.
First of all, a casting agent couldn’t better assemble this crew.
You’ve got this young, slick-haired, gap-toothed hot shit guitarist/singer.
The rhythm guitarist was a 30 something black dude wearing his best Johnny
Cash outfit and a Stevie Ray hat. The bassist was an older, grey bearded
blues society type, and the drummer was your neighbor that’s playing
Dokken way too loud on a Saturday night and hauling out bags of Old Milwaukee
empties on recycling day. And they were pretty good!
In fact, on their last song, a Hendrix medley, they
were rocking hard enough to blow the socks off of any hipster band. The
behind-the-back theatrics were the icing on the cake. It’ll be a
long time before .45 Caliber is gracing the cover of the City Paper but
that doesn’t make them any less of a local treasure.
