31st Street Pub / Pittsburgh
 Letting
the freak flag fly on a Thursday night with Mike Watt and his Secondmen
boys from San Pedro at the 31st
Street Pub. It wasn’t easy getting out to this one and if I
remember correctly wifey was saying I was more a roommate than a husband
as I was walking out the door after 11 P.M. But I was determined to finally
see Watt on what was his forth appearance in four years down at the Pub.
I will admit to being more of a fIREHOSE fan and being less familiar with
his recent material as well as the whole Minutemen catalog. Watt has had
a storied career, playing his bass for not only his bands but over the
years joining the likes of Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro and most recently
Iggy Pop and The Stooges.
I got to the Pub just as their
set began and tonight they would be playing Watt’s new release “The
Secondman’s Middle Stand” in its entirety. There was a decent
crowd of maybe 60 or so people and I spotted Judy Banana standing near
the rear of the bar. The Pub has gotten a new speaker setup since I’d
last been here and the sound has noticeably improved.
Watt’s music is a unique
blend of punk abandon and challenging art rock and one of the early songs
in this set made me feel like I was in slow motion watching Watt as he
labored through the lyrics. The new cd is said to cover his travails through
a near-fatal illness a few years back. The tempo picked up throughout
the set and Watt became particularly animated slapping at his “thud
staff” on a few numbers. At one point, referencing his illness as
well as the loss of minutemen band mate D.Bonn, Watt waxed prophetic about
not living for the weekend going at it each day. “You just never
know when your time is gonna be up and that’s why I play each show
like it could be the last.” This got an obvious rise out of the
crowd and I only wish wifey were there to hear it. Maybe Watt can provide
a written excuse for me to bring home to her.
Ending with an encore of a
couple of Minutemen songs the crowd clearly got their money’s worth.
Watt made the obligatory request for a place to crash and safe haven for
the “boat.” Thankfully there were some enthusiastic takers
because I would have really been in the doghouse if I had brought this
crew home with me.
