 Tonight, New York’s Central Park was being blanketed by 26 inches of snow, a “storm of the century” that will be talked about and exaggerated for decades. A mere 350 miles away, Brooklyn’s best kept secret, Marah, were taking the stage of Club Café for their second show in only three months, and although we only got a dusting, the blizzard was on stage, as, once again, Marah performed another unforgettable, near-legendary, show at this criminally small slice of Pittsburgh’s South Side.
I scored a free ticket thanks to the Message Board on the band’s website and the fact that a guy from Philly had his flight cancelled on account of the storm. With a 7 P.M. start and being a Sunday night it’s good to know that we still got close to a full house, as these guys deserve no less.
The show started with Dave coming out solo and acoustic, playing “Formula Cola, Dollar Draft” from their first album and was slowly joined by Serge on harmonica and then the rest of the band. Afterward Dave quipped, “I’ve been looking forward to this show. It feels like were home” and the regulars knew he wasn’t just sucking up to the audience. They knew they were in for another 2+ hour rocker with beers and fisticuffs and even a shout out to the Steelers.
So the fight, or almost-fight, happened when Jim, who somehow works his way into every one of my Marah reviews, was doing his unintentional drunken Beetle Bob impression in the small space between the stage and front tables. Apparently it’s not cool to keep stepping on the foot of a pregnant girl ‘cause her boyfriend had enough, went after Jim, and the whole right side of Club Café became a beehive of activity. Bartender jumping of the bar, overzealous do-gooders coming from the far end of the bar, you know, your usual drunken bar fights. The band kept playing “Round Eye Blues” but was kind of trying to check out what was going on. Jim got kicked out, along with his cousin, Dr. Mike.
Serge has taken out his dancing on the bar and tables routine from the most recent shows and I can’t say I miss them. Fun a first, but could grow old for repeat viewers. The whole show was very tight but there were a few points when it seemed like things were falling apart but they pulled it back together. The audience loved “Barstool Boys” and the first encore which consisted of “The Catfisherman” and “Walt Whitman Bridge.” The crowd demanded a second and they came out with “The Demon Of White Sadness.”
I got a little freaked when I saw my bar tab and realized that I’d had eight beers but that wasn’t going to prevent a nightcap at Jack’s. With the night somewhat early, Dave mentioned they’d probably be drinking there after the show and probably even tomorrow after a songwriting thing at Pitt-Greensburg. I headed over and my buddy Scott was tending the back bar. He usually sees me after shows and said he had already heard all about this one because the brawlers, after getting kicked out, took up residence there. I know Jim a bit and he and Dr. Drew pleaded their case and said they’ve been kicked out of Club Café fo’ life. Dave came in and proceeded to bond with his fellow outlaws. The rest of the band staggered in but it’s kind of blur from there. One hell of a Sunday night.
