I waited too long to write this one and now I don’t remember all
the details. Once again this show was at Garfield Artworks. Wifey and
I, in the trusty Civic, snaked along the Allegheny River and up into Bloomfield-Garfield
for a night of desolate, haunting music by Jason Molina and Co. We made
on it time and willfully shelled out our bucks to Manny. Taking a seat
in the back, we proceeded to open the requisite cooler bag of beers as
the band readied itself on the stage.
They started off with “The
Dark Don’t Hide It” which has some decent solos and was a
signal of the rocking to come. A couple songs into the set, we heard the
unmistakable keyboard intro to Bob Seger’s “Still The Same.”
Being a Seger fanatic, I was quite excited. They played it slow and somber
which was fine by me. A spirited “I’ve Been Riding With The
Ghost” got me out of my seat to take a few pictures. This is probably
my favorite song by these guys and it was good and noisy.
Only playing two or so songs
from their last album, I wasn’t familiar with the other material
but it was sufficiently rocking and subdued in the right places. I did
miss the absence of “Farewell Transmission”, another favorite.
At some point Jason spoke of some small, Podunk town in Indiana they had
come from but other than that not much interaction. This didn’t
matter as the audience of about 50 were quite attentive and brought the
band back out for an encore of “Mammy Don’t Let Your Babies
Grow Up To Be Cowboys. We bought a live CD on the way out and called it
a night.
