Lyle Lovett / John Hiatt / Joe Ely / Guy Clark
02.14.2006 / Carnegie Music Hall / Pittsburgh, PA

The stars aligned and this show with $65 tickets fell on Valentines Day. It helped that I was online as soon as they went on sale and scored front row center tickets but they were still a little pricey. I knew Wifey would dig this, though, and I threw in a decent meal to boot.

Thinking it was pretty cool that we’d be front row I decided to keep Wifey in the dark about exactly where we were going after dinner. And as we walked into the Carnegie Music Hall there were no obvious signs about what was going on, just people drinking in the lobby. Five minutes later these four guys came strolling on stage to thunderous applause. Just four chairs on stage.

Guy Clark seemed a little on the cranky side at first but he came around. Joe Ely was a bit subdued and seemed to revel in the attention that John Hiatt was getting. Of course, Hiatt was funny, guarded, quick-witted and revealing, “I never finished high school Lyle.” That was in response to Lovett’s prodding John for his senior class song. Lyle’s was “Freebird.”  It was a great 2 ½ hours of music and guys ribbing each other.
