Los Lonely Boys, Martin
Sexton
06.10.2005 / Hartwood Acres / Pittsburgh, PA
Every
summer the county puts on Friday night shows in South Park and Sunday
night shows at Hartwood Acres in the North, all free of course. Since
traffic and distance usually rule out the Friday shows, in the past we’ve
seen numerous great acts at Hartwood including John Prine, Ralph Stanley,
George Clinton and P Funk, and Lucinda Williams to name a few. Los Lonely
Boys were scheduled to play last year but it got canceled so this year
they squeezed it in on a Friday night and I expected a rowdy crowd.
Unfortunately the specter of rain hung over everyone’s
heads most of Friday evening and we even drove through a downpour on our
way there after a beer stop. Being a county park, the official word is
no alcohol allowed but since there are only a couple of elderly county
cops working the show it’s rarely if ever enforced. Traffic can
be a bitch if you’re trying to make it on time since a two-lane
road is the only access to parking.
That said, we got there a little late and caught only
the last three or so songs by Martin Sexton. He sounded great and his
voice was able to carry into the upper reaches of the vast expanse of
green that is Hartwood Acres. We decided to hang back towards the car
because the sky looked like it could open up and douse us any second and
we had the baby in tow. I’m talking some real threatening thunder
and lighting. Enough that some guy on stage felt he had to announce that
if the lightning picked up we should probably consider our safety first
and head to our cars. Thanks, but for the die-hard fans of the Garza brothers
it would take no less than a tornado to get them from their spot up front.
Los Lonely Boys took the stage quickly and in no time
they whipped everyone into a frenzy with their Tex-Mex boogie. My only
venture up towards the front revealed an exuberant crowd with fans of
many ages. Now I’m not a huge fan or anything but I always respected
their music and they showed tonight that they are capable of as high an
energy show as anyone. Even sitting towards the back the sound was great
and on some numbers the band was on fire with some wonderful solos by
guitarist Henry.
Right around 10:00 it started raining and we bolted
for the car as did a lot of other folks sitting towards the back. We missed
the last two songs including the hit “Heaven” but next time
around we’ll leave the baby at home and get our groove on rightfully.
For those scoring at home:
1. Crazy Dream
2. Hollywood
3. (New Song) ...something about you baby makes me want to be with you
4.Dime Mi Amore
5. Man To Beat
6. Mamacita
7. Velvet Sky
8. Onda
9. More Than Love
10. Don't tell Me
11. Heaven
12. End Of A New Beginning
