Kid Congo Powers

 This was one of those shows that seemed a worthy gamble for a Thursday night. I know very little about Kid Congo Powers, am wholly unfamiliar with any of his work in the well-respected band The Gun Club, and while I know of The Cramps, I can’t say I’ve listened to very much of the music.
But I figured it was worth a shot so I biked out at 11 or so and the strip was a ghost town. I get to the 31st Street Pub, drop $10 on Manny, and walk inside to find 20 or so people split up against the bar on one side of the room and the wall on the other. It was more than a little depressing. I guess I expected more people. Local band, Cro Flies Trio, were onstage and were getting cursory applause but they weren’t doing much to rouse the crowd from their slumber.
After that set I walked over to Cookie’s, a black bar, for lack of a better term, for a couple beers because I couldn’t stand the thought of sitting in the Pub alone, staring at the wall for 20 minutes. Cookie’s isn’t much better, with no TV to stare at, but at least there were some characters in there keeping things somewhat entertaining.
I got back to the Pub and Kid Congo was already onstage backed by a three piece band. Most of the folks sitting quietly earlier were now on their feet as Kid swayed flamboyantly above them. Employing a speak-singing style and backed by a two piece, Kid Congo presided over an hours worth of garage rock tunes. He gave no indication of any displeasure regarding the small crowd and exuded a boyish charm onstage.
I tried to brush up on my Gun Club history before this thing and do know he played two songs, "Sex Beat" and "Fire of Love,” from that catalogue.
This show deserved a larger crowd and, on the way out, folks were giving Manny the nod for a job well done.
