 The Great Bob Smith and Tom Vesh are obsessed with this kid. I had heard of him and had probably seen him playing with other folks once or twice over the years but have to admit I was a bit skeptical. So I went to a show in Shadyside a few months ago and it was pretty good. “Guitar” Zack has got himself a decent mix of Buddy Guy showoff chops mixed in with Zappa weirdness. The audience was a mix of younger friends (Zack is 19) and parents and relatives. His dad was real cool and I instantly saw why my 40 year old friends liked the scene because it was good music with some partying people.
So Wifey and I trek out to Route 30. You can see Casa D’Ice from like a mile away because it’s adorned with blue neon “ice” hanging from its roof. It looked huge but you go in this door and realize you need to get in an elevator first. The elevator opens and all of the sudden you are right next to the band with everybody looking at you. The room is actually on the smallish side but cozy with a good number of tables to sit at.
I could hear on the elevator that the band was playing Zack’s big song, “My Hair Has Seven Sides,” not sure if it’s the actual title though. I guess this got some radio play on WDVE or something because everybody seems to know it.
This was supposed to be his last show before a move to L.A. but things didn’t work out and he’s remaining in the ‘Burgh for now. I think it would do the kid good to head down to Austin. I can’t think of a better place for a young guitar slinger. I’m sure Clifford Antone would dig him.
Anyways, the show was decent. Wifey and I were tired and didn’t stay long. It was just one of those nights where you’re going through the motions. I would definitely recommend him, though.
