 If these two bands on the same bill weren’t odd enough to warrant attendance, that fact that it was falling on Halloween night just sealed the deal. This same show happened a little over a year ago and I had a blast as did both bands, as evidenced in an all-star jam of “Running with the Devil” and some off-stage rough-and-tumble by members of both Magnolia Electric Co. and Grand Buffet.
The rain that spoiled the kids’ trick-or-treating thankfully ended before I biked down Spring Hill and across the 16th St. Bridge, watching a lonely coal barge snake it’s way up the foggy Allegheny River. I got to the Pub a little early and Magnolia singer Jason Molina was standing out front all by his lonesome. I said something about liking the new album and then something stupid like “I’m just going to have a cheap beer somewhere. I’ll be back” to which he politely pretended to give a shit. So I biked up Polish Hill thinking I’d have a beer at Gooksi’s but a band was playing and they were charging a $5 cover so I went to the Rock Room for a cheap Iron draft and stared at the boob tube while someone was rocking out to Jet on the jukebox.
I got to the 31st with Magnolia Electric Co. already on stage and playing 'Memphis Moon” one of my favorites from their new disc Fading Trails. They followed with my second favorite off that album, “Lonesome Valley.” It was evident right from the start that Molina and company were happy to be back in the Pub as they enthusiastically attacked each new song. The highlight of their set would have to be a mesmerizing “I’ve Been Riding With The Ghost” with most of the Pub crowd bobbing along as Molina shouted the lyrics “Now something’s got to change!”
I hung at the bar between sets and watched Lord Grunge of Grand Buffet set up his equipment. It was weird watching him do this quietly, all by his lonesome and then as soon as Buffet started it was like he got into character, becoming completely animated. I also thought I sensed some sort of a riff between Grunge and Jackson as Jackson threw a couple of quick asides Grunge’s way which was far from standard procedure for these guys. Grunge also did a short solo sting that only served to highlight the fact that when these guys aren't being origional and funny they're no better than a glorified karaoke act.
The audience wasn’t as rowdy as one might expect on Halloween night but there were a few costumes in the audience, notably a smoking, drinking Tweedy Bird. Jackson had a good comment saying, “I see some of you are dressed like girls I want to fuck!”
Grand Buffet started off slow and I almost bailed thinking about work in the morning but I stuck it out and they picked up the pace. I think the guitarist for Magnolia joined in on a song or two but the craziness of their last show never materialized.
I happened to be driving through Bloomfield the next afternoon and saw a buoyant Jackson walking out of a greasy spoon with a big set of headphones on, smiling all the while. It was then that I realized that this guy probably doesn’t have a day job. Good for him. I’ll be looking forward to the next Cobalt Black show.
