Good Brother Earl
04.08.2006 / Rex Theatre / Pittsburgh, PA

Wifey was adamant that we go to this if for no other reason than to show our support for guitar player Paul Fitzsimmons and the fact the he is our son’s guitar teacher and contributed to his getting into CAPA performing arts high school thus saving us thousands a year on a Catholic education. She also listens to WYEP during the day and they have played more of Good Brother Earl’s music than any other local band of recent memory and although you won’t catch me admitting it on the Roboto board, I like the tunes of theirs that I have head so far.

This was a CD release party at the Rex Theatre. We got in and caught the last two songs from piano rockers Fooling April. Now, I’m inclined to hate this band if not for their name alone, and since Wifey didn't seem to hold a much higher opinion I must concur that they sucked though I’d be willing to give them another listen.

After a too long break Good Brother Earl finally took the stage. I must note that the Rex has finally torn out the movie theater seats in favor of an open floor with seats on both sides. A much needed improvement in my opinion. I’ll probably come here more often because of it.

They played their new disk, Perfect Tragedy, in its entirety. The first song, “Fighting Gravity”, is definitely the best song here and I would think that if someone was able to put some money behind it these guys would have themselves a radio hit. I also enjoyed “Hard to Love,” “Anna,” and “Show and Tell.” The only real stumble appears to be “Girls Make Love Boys Make War” in which they try too hard to shed their pop friendly sensibilities and end up with a messy jumble of yells and discordant chords.

Journeyman drummer David Throckmorton got a well deserved solo before a break in which the Jose Cuervo whores threw there wares to the audience. They returned to play other favorites including the always listenable “Mr. Folks” and "Another Lonely Day." A rocking version of Neil Young’s "Powderfinger" was a perfect display of Fitzsimmons powerful chops.

You would think that this band would be a marketers dream. Singer Jeff Schmutz has a nice guy, approachable image with the looks to boot. From what Wifey and I know of Paul you couldn’t find a nicer guy. I didn’t see too many beers being consumed onstage. What’s not to like about these guys.

The only problem was some over enthusiastic idiots up front that kept acting like jackasses. Sure, this is your band, you know these guys. Have a little fun. That doesn’t mean continuously and unsuccessfully trying to crowd surf when there are only eight people standing next to you and the band is on a slow song. Other than that it was a good time.
