Gang of Four
10.04.2005 / Mr. Small's Theatre / Pittsburgh, PA

On this Tuesday night Mr. Small’s was not only packed with older sceensters but the young hipsters showed up too, as evidenced by the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Bloc Party tees. I arrived a couple of songs late as Gang of Four were performing “Not Great Men” and the audience were rapt at attention, obviously populated by more than of few people who had attended the last Pittsburgh performance 23 years ago.

Well into a year’s worth of touring, the band had their act together, with singer Jon King stalking the stage like a man possessed and guitarist Andy Gill, lording over the crowd with a dispassionate gaze, slashing at his instrument to recreate the unique sound that’s back in vogue today.

Playing most of Entertainment!, the band played with all the passion one could hope for. I found I was able to immerse myself more into the music by moving closer to the front. It’s hard to translate the intensity on stage at Small’s across such a wide-open space, being and old church and all. Problem is the beers are in the back so I guess you have to decide what’s more important to you.
