 I
debated not attending this since I had seen these guys recently and it's
in my better interest to mix things up considering how infrequently I
get out. But then it hit me. In 1966 would I have thought twice about
seeing The Velvet Underground in the Village for the second time in one
month? In 1973 would it have been unadventurous to attend the second
night of Led Zeppelin's Tampa shows. Maybe Jim Croce was playing somewhere
in the area. Was there something better to do in Hollywood in 1986 other
than attend one of the numerous Guns N' Roses performances at The Roxy?
So, fuck ya! I was going to The Four Seasons Boys again. And I was bringing
Wifey this time.
Is being prepared having duct
tape and plastic at your home just in case the bird flu hits? Is it remembering
to charge your ipod before you go on that long bike ride? For me it's
always bringing along the soft cooler of beers whether or not the show
is advertised as having free PBR. You just never know what is going to
happen.
So Wifey and I take the short
ride down to the Mexican War Streets and arrive as a couple of young rappers
are on the stage performing to a partly interested audience. Having just
forked over $5 to hear music, we paid attention and we pleased with ourselves
at how hip we would appear to our 14 year-old who was at home watching
the youngsters. The
two guys onstage were intense to watch and performed admirably.
After a short break The Four
Seasons Boys took the stage. Right off the bat Wifey was in stitches as
the band launched into "Original Patriot" following a rant about
bringing the troops home. The great thing about these dudes is you're
not sure where the seriousness ends and the mocking begins.
While probably not the best
venue for the band, a brightly lit long and skinny room, they made the
best of it by pounding out the hits one after the other. Sing-alongs
(I never RUN / In the face of a FIGHT / And I'm up all NIGHT / AND I'M
DOIN' ALLLLLRIGHT!), declarations (I'm mean, you're not!), and anthems
like "Pussy Destroyer" round out the offerings by this group
of upstanding young gentlemen.
So the PBR runs out and it’s
time to switch to PBR Lite. The band makes fun of this but the Lite quickly
runs out and there's no beer left. Prepared for this, I start passing
out my few remaining Busch's. I get one onstage and decide to include
the cozy that is my security blanket.
An hour later and it's over
and my life is better because of it.
