 My first time seeing Dave Alvin was in a crowded Antone’s in Austin, TX. Before being moved back to 6th Street, the club spent a number of years on the upper reaches of the UT campus and a few blocks from where I spent most of my year that I lived in Austin. On the prodding from a roommate I downed a few mushrooms as I headed out the door alone to catch a guy I knew from X as well as his wonderful solo effort King of California. What took place was nothing less than a spiritual awakening as Alvin’s magical storytelling and rollicking bar band introduced me to a new form of Americana that was about to explode and become known as Alt-County and the No Depression movement.
Tonight’s Alvin was a different beast entirely.
Starting off, I had bike trouble as soon as I got down Spring Hill, forgot my lock and had to buy one at Eckerd’s, then realized I seriously overestimated the time the opener would be on. Walking in I stood right behind Dave of Dave’s Music Mine who proceed to name the songs I’d missed: “Abilene”, “Forth of July”, “Out of Control”, and “Out in California” to name a few. I thought he was shitting me but it turns out the opening act Billy Toms only played four songs and I’d missed almost half the show.
Club Café was packed but the crowd was respectful and attentive as Alvin was just one man on stage tonight. He was looking a little ragged to me, like a crazy uncle, and I was a bit taken aback by his terrible teeth. Get this man a dentist.
Halfway into “King of California” he began to forget the words and stumbled a few times before he got back on track but took it in stride. I was beginning to think this would become a train wreck but Alvin reached deep into his pocket of memories and gave an impassioned performance of “Ashgrove”, explaining the significance of this defunct L.A. blues/folk club on his musical upbringing. Another standout for me was the up tempo “Dry River.”
Worth the $18 and from what I understand I may have missed the better half of the show so shame on me.
Afterwards, I strolled down Carson St. to Hines Ward’s bar The Locker Room to catch Pitt win one in the Big East Tournament. Afterwards it was a bike ride to the Doubletree Hotel downtown for the yearly drunkfest that is the Kelly family from Brighton Heights’ pre-Saint Patrick’s Day parade party. Realizing I would never be able to hold my own with a bunch of Irish folks that had been drinking most of the day I called it a night made the lonely ride back up the hill just after 2 A.M.
