This
show was a pleasant surprise. Being a Monday night and cold and rainy
I didn’t really plan to make this but Wifey was falling asleep at
about 10:00 and I paced the room trying to find the right words to tell
her I was heading out. She was cool with it though and I headed down to
the South Side.
While waiting for my first
beer at the bar I wasn’t really paying much attention to what was
going on behind me but when I turned around I saw this short, balding
guy wearing a space suit flanked by two cardboard cutouts; one of Darth
Vader and the other a robot or something. He was singing along to a backing
track and playing his guitar Townshend-windmill style except there was
no sound coming from it. Pretty hilarious. And then he was finished before
I could even get out my camera. Turns out it was Robert Schneider of the
band Apples in Stereo and he was calling himself Marbles.
After a beer at Jacks I was
back in Club Café for Archer Prewitt, guitarist for The Sea &
Cake. He has a new solo album
out but not having heard any of his material I was there with an open
mind. He sounded good and had a competent band behind him but was a bit
too mellow for me. His expert guitar playing and well-crafted songs does
put him a step above your average singer-songwriter but I wasn’t
buying tonight. There was a nice twist on the last song as a couple of
horns appeared and brought some life to the stage but then it was over.
Another beer and smoke break
and I was back for Clem Snide. I didn’t know much about these guys
either, other than a few songs I’ve heard and the fact that my most
jaded of friends
actually enjoyed one of their shows in N.Y.C. Coming on stage in matching
tuxedoes with animals embroidered on them and opening with “Fill
Me With Your Light” got this show off to a rollicking start. Hear
it here. Lead
singer Eef Barzelay has a unique vocal style that never tires. At the
start he thanked everyone for coming out on a Monday night and said he’s
usually home watching 24 at this time. Some highlights of their
hour plus show included songs "Don't Be Afraid of Your Anger”
and “End of Love.” They ended with a cover of The Talking
Heads’ “Heaven.” For an encore singer Eef came out and
took some requests and was backed by the guitarist on the last song.
Having wrote this a good 10
days after the show I’m sure I’m leaving out something good.
This band put on a wonderful performance and I’m looking forward
to the next time they come around.
As far as pictures go, there
was some dude with a serious camera that took like a million pictures
and I was feeling a bit intimidated and was afraid to use my flash. Maybe
it was the T.V cameras or the fact that I was a little too smoked up and
feeling insecure but I’m disappointed at the results. Somewhere
out there is a photo document of this whole damn show. If you’re
in the Pittsburgh area this is airing Sat. March 19 on UPN and will be
available On-Demand
after that. Even better, watch the interview by the tough chick with the
hat
and see what the band has to say.
