 I totally expected to hate this. The two songs I streamed from Circle’s live album were almost unlistenable. But a little criticism that maybe I need to broaden my horizons a bit was taken to heart and as Wifey fell asleep I rolled down Spring Hill well after 11:30.
The Strip was a fucking ghost town, on a Thursday night no less. The only places looking alive were the black bars, Art’s, Cookies, and some newer jazz room that I’ve yet to check out. I headed over to Sufak’s first and learned some valuable information. 1. Robot Chicken – why am I just discovering you? Hilarious. 2. There is a high stakes game of poker that takes place in the back room here. And 3. They make Bacardi 151 drinks to go. No shit! Some guy came in got a beer and a 151 and Coke and walked back out the door, hands full.
I hate waiting at the 31st with no place to sit and no one to talk to while the band is setting up. So I was questioning my decision to come here, standing in the middle of the room, until the band from Finland finally started just around 1 A.M. I expected some sort of freak noise fest but I was high enough that I figured I could tolerate it. But tonight this band would have none of that as they labored through a one-hour set that rivals the intensity of any show I’ve seen this year.
The singer was this little bearded, hat and aviator glasses-wearing, demonic dude that was spewing some funky Finnish vocals. You couldn’t tell what he was saying but you know he meant it, dammit. He moved from the keyboard to playing a drum to standing and getting his freak on. And speaking of freaks the crowd was one band of misfits. But I was there alone so count me in.
How to explain their set? I dunno because it was one continuous jam with each song melting into the other. And the drunker I got the more fun I was having. At times they would slow it down only to focus on a monotonous beat that was slowly ramped back up again. I can’t explain how rocking this was. Just a fucking great hour of music. I don’t know why but there was a keg up front that at one point was waived by some dude as it spewed beer upon the audience.
No one wanted this to end but just after 2 A.M. owner Joel came up front with the cutoff signal but the band played one last song and it seemed to piss him off. As I was walking out I heard him ranting to a hapless Manny about being the bad guy when all the crowd wants is just “one more song.”
