 It’s
easy to sit back and say there’s no decent local bands if you're
not getting out to see anyone. So Wifey and I put our time in Saturday
night and headed to the Rex Theatre on the Southside to check out the
cd release for Chalk Outline Party. Some history first. On a solo bike
ramble about a year and a half ago I dropped into The Warsaw Tavern (now
The Rock Room with a DJ on Sat. nights) and coughed up the $3 to enter
the adjacent room to catch a great set by Eric James and his band followed
by Chalk Outline Party. It was one of those nights where as you got drunker
the music got louder and more rocking and I remember a couple of drunk
hi-fives with Eric as we stood right up front of the band and were probably
the only other people in that room. I ended up getting Eric’s number
and kept telling him how I was going to get him to play in my backyard
(driveway,actually) for a summer party. Well the party happened but I
never made the call.
Unfortunately, a warm up drink in The Fish Tank and a return trip to
the car to get the camera means we missed Eric’s set this night.
Gotta check this guy out again because his last song sounded great as
we rounded the corner from 17th Street and into The Rex. Wifey made a
mistake by leaving her black leather jacket at home as the hip factor
was way up tonight. So we just got our drinks and slipped into the comfortable
theatre seats and waited.
Up next was Comrad, a respected local trio if what I’ve read about
them is correct. Most of the crowd of 60 or so got up front and center
as they took the stage, so they’ve got a decent fan base. They played
about a 40-minute set and although I would see them again I wasn’t
too impressed tonight. Near the end it was obvious that the songs all
started to sound alike. They had their moments though and I get the impression
that if I see these guys in a smaller space rather than the cavernous
theatre it would be easier to get into their music.
Chalk Outline Party did a better job of maintaining a stage presence
as their brooding singer sulked back and forth across the stage and the
engineer took advantage of the lighting effects available here. As they
started, Wifey enjoyed their similarities to The Cure but I was waiting
for them to kick it up a notch, which they did, if not till near the end
of their set. By then we were up front and enjoying ourselves. All in
all it was a decent night. Not great but didn’t suck either. Which
is about all you can ask for really.
