 Tonight was basically a dry run to test out my new camera that I’ve been bitching about not having for over a year now. It didn’t hurt that PG critic Ed Masley’s last show as a local with his band The Breakup Society was happening at the 31st. I think Ed’s had a number of farewell performances over the years, I vaguely remember a Frampton Bros. one at Luciano’s (?) across from Duquesne almost ten years ago, but this time he’s making a move to Arizona.
Biking through The Strip I stopped into Mullaney’s Pub and caught a few tunes by a young group of lads playing Irish themed jam music. Not bad.
I got to the Pub just as Breakup Society took the stage and they banged out a set of delightfully rocking songs leaning heavily on their release James at 35. The thing about Ed is rarely do you observe someone onstage that appears to be having as much fun as he is. It’s all smiles and genuine appreciation for the crowd for his whole performance. Looks like Norm Nardini is going to do a tribute show for Ed at Moondogs. All I can imagine is this turning into some sort of roast and good luck to Ed with that. Norm can be merciless.
After The Breakup Society’s set I hopped on the bike and rode up to Gooski’s to check out Life In Bed. There was only a smallish crowd in the back paying attention but I've always dug these guys and I was getting into it. I had barely finished my beer before I got a tap on the shoulder from the incomparable Bob Smith. We had a beer at the bar and then I headed back down the hill.
I popped back into the Pub to see the last 40 seconds of Black Tie Revue. Oh well. I made one last stop at a newish hot dog shop, TopDog in The Strip. This is drunk food at its best. I believe I had a Chicago dog and the presentation was flawless, complete with dill pickle and tomato wedges. The guys working were way cool and the cook recognized me from taking his picture hours earlier as I was biking by. As long as it’s on the way this is gonna become my new must stop before calling it a night.
