The Holy Grail / Cincinnati, OH

How not to drink when on vacation

Getting out of bed was a real miracle this morning. I can do my fair share of drinking and have dealt with hangovers but this one was a doozy. I was just pounding High Life’s at The Jayhawks show the night before and things got worse from there. Now I was convinced I would spend the whole Saturday in some shithole motel in Lexington but Wifey got me out by 11 A.M. and we drove around Lexington a bit before stopping at a little coffee shop where she had a sandwich and I stared at a bagel.

The drive up to Cincinnati is a blur as I was staring straight ahead, glued to the headrest, for 80 miles, convinced I was going to die any minute. Once in town we drove around a while and then checked into the Holiday Inn along the mighty Ohio. A few hours of sleep and a decent meal and I was feeling better but still a bit worse for wear.

I had scouted this show out on the internet and the band’s website had some pretty decent sound bites so I kept telling Wifey that she was going to love this band. After coffee and a beer we settled into The Holy Grail only to suffer through two crappy bands and a start time of 12:45 A.M. Right before they went on I got a CD and was talking to the guitarist who mentioned that they were beat and had played too drunk in Cleveland the night before. I told him we were on the same page and I was hoping to make it till the end of their set.

Well our similarities ended there. These guys came out charging and were flailing wildly and experimenting with feedback on the very first song. Wifey and I were both tired and were hoping for something a bit softer but these guys went on all cylinders the whole night. What a bunch of talented musicians. Give me another night and different circumstances and I would tell you this was the show of the year. As it stands, though, we were tired and just trying to make it through the night. I would highly recommend checking these guys out if possible. I think they’re from Boston and they were headed down to SXSW. I’m sure they’ll have no trouble making a good impression down in Austin.
