 I
had to bail early from my kid’s baseball game to hit this early
show at Club Café. A week ago I was asking promoter Jon
how tickets for this were going and he said he’d sold some but nothing
crazy. Well, walking up to the door there were a bunch of people milling
around. Never a good sign. I saw Jon and he goes, “You didn’t
get tickets, right? Aw, you’re killing me. Go ahead in, I’ll
take care of you on this one.” So Andrew Bird gets a sellout. Good
for him. And I finally get a free show. So I made it up at the bar.
The room was filled with a
Pittsburgh audience that I’m unfamiliar with: young and hip, social
and attractive. I guess it was the after happy hour crowd that I never
was a part of. It got me to thinking that not all nights need to end with
a 2 A.M. stumble home, waking up for work the next morning being worried
how you’re gonna make it to lunch.
My concerns that the loud rumblings
of the crowd would not subside were unfounded as all was quiet the moment
Andrew Bird and his drummer Kevin O'Donnell took the stage. What’s
amazing about this guy is how he uses a layering technique to achieve
a full band sound all by his lonesome. He’ll play a few notes on
the violin and then strum a few strings on the guitar and next thing you
know it’s as if he has full accompaniment behind him. He also is
a kick ass whistler.
That last part is what made
this show a requirement for me. You see, I’ve had his song “A
Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left” stuck in my head since
the first time I heard it nearly three months ago. Nothing less than a
full show exorcism can fix that.
I’m only familiar with
some of the songs on the new album and he played a soothing “Sovay”
a few songs into the set. A couple of songs later I recognized that lonesome
whistle
refrain that I’d been waiting for and wasn’t disappointed.
What a great tune!
The audience was very gracious
and attentive. A ramped up version of “Fake Palindromes” was
played. He capped the hour plus set with a few songs in an encore and
that was it. I came to wondering why none of my childless friends attend
any of these 8 o’clock shows. You’re home by 9:30 so there’s
on excuse about going to work the next day.
Now “Your
Little Hoodrat Friend” by The Hold Steady has taken over the
obsessive loop in my head and I’m not gonna be able to make it Lancaster,
their closest show, so I’m screwed.
